'76 Grid Team Heads List of Inductees into Brown Hall of Fame on Saturday
The 1976 Brown Football team, the first from the school to win the Ivy League Championship, which it shared with Yale, will be inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame next week.
The squad- which included All-Ivy quarterback Paul Michalko, East Providence native and All-Ivy defensive tackle Kevin Rooney, and safety Ron Brown, now the associate head coach the University of Nebraska- was voted by the New York Times as one of the top 10 teams in Ivy League football history.
The team will be honored along with seven individual athletes, as well as Elizabeth Chace, recipient of the Maddock Award for outstanding service to Brown athletics, at the 30th annual dinner Saturday at the Westin Hotel. The dinner is scheduled for 7 p.m. with cocktails at 6. Tickets are $40 per person and may be purchased by calling Brown Hall of Fame president Herbert DeSimone Jr. at 421-8200.
Others to be inducted:
Marcus Thomspon '90, basketball- A first team All-Ivy selection in his senior year, Thompson finished his career as Brown's third all-time scorer with 1,328 points.
Kevin Tracy '85, golf- Named to the first team twice, Tracy is the only Brown golfer ever to earn All-Ivy status. He was alone named to Brown's list of the 100 best athletes in the 20th century.
Derek W. Chauvette '93, ice hockey- The forward, who compiled 34 goals and 99 assists, co-captained the 1992-93 team that was runner-up in the ECAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
Monique Kapitulik '91, lacrosse- One of the top defensemen ever to play at Brown, Kapitulik was a three-time All-Ivy selection and two-time Brine All-American.
Bill Frost '74, soccer- The sixth all-time leading scorer and fifth all-time goal-scorer with totals of 32-9 - 73, Frost was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams, including the 1973 squad that advanced to the semifinals.
Cathy Luke '95, volleyball- A four-time All-Ivy selection and fifth all-time in career kills at Brown with 783, Luke became the first Bear to be named Ivy League player of the year in 1994.
Steve Thoma, '92, wrestling- A two-time NCAA qualifier and three-time All-Ivy selection, Thoma is the only Brown wrestler ever to be named Outstanding Wrestler at the Eastern Tournament and one of only nine Bears to win an Eastern title.
